What is Active Release Technique ART?

The active release technique was developed by Mike Leahy, a sports chiropractor who noticed that when he applied pressure on an injured area of his patients’ bodies they would often feel better almost immediately. He then began applying this same principle to other areas of their bodies where there were problems such as neck pain or backache. Nowadays it is the gold standard treatment technique for muscles and other soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, etc.

How Does Active Release Therapy Work?

An active release treatment is like a technique used in massage. The practitioner will shorten the soft or connective tissues present in the body and then apply a very specific tension to their hands as you actively stretch and lengthen these tissues.

The therapist can assess the texture and tension of these tissues to see if it is healthy or it has scar tissue that may need further treatment. The amount and direction of tension can be adjusted to treat the problem area with scar tissue. Each ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment, allowing the practitioners to continually assess the health of the tissues.

Benefits of Active Release Technique

ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART.Mbr> These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles. Overused muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways: Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc) Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma) Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia).
Each of these factors can result in tough, dense scar tissue formation in the affected area. This scar tissue may result in muscles becoming shorter and weaker, abnormal tension on tendons resulting in tendonitis and/or and nerves may become trapped.
This may lead to loss in range of motion, loss of strength, numbness or tingling and pain. ART treats this abnormal tissue by combining specific lines of tension with active movement by the patient. Treatment helps to break down scar tissue, which facilitates increases in range of motion and tissue healing.

FAQs

What is the difference between myofascial release and active release technique?
Myofascial release involves a therapist applying pressure to specific trigger points in your body. The goal of MFR therapy is to reduce pain, increase range of motion and improve function by releasing tight muscles that are causing tension or holding you back from moving freely. It can be used for acute injuries as well as chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, neck/shoulder problems, lower back issues, headaches, sports injury recovery and more.
Does insurance cover active release technique?
