3D Gait Analysis St. Catharines

What is 3D gait analysis?

The 3D Gait Analysis System uses three high-speed infrared cameras to track the motion of twenty (20) reflective markers placed on the body. Using this gait analysis equipment, NHRC is able to accurately measure walking and running movement patterns in all 3 dimensions for the ankles, knees, hips and pelvis.

These measurements are used to create a visual representation of your gait and then compare this with an ever-growing database of runners and walkers at the University of Calgary.

This method of analysis has become the gold standard and most accurate assessment tool available for running and walking injuries. 3D Gait Analysis is up to 38% more accurate than traditional video camera analysis.

3D Gait Analysis Can Help With:

  • Assess person’s natural gait pattern
  • Reduce risk of injuries
  • Improve muscle strength
  • Improve joint capabilities
  • Assess and treat abnormalities

Benefits of 3D Gait Analysis

Gait is defined as a manner of walking or running. Gait analysis is a method used to assess our biomechanics (good and bad), the motions our body goes through when we walk or run. New research is showing that most running injuries occur due to poor technique. This same research is showing that efficient gait patterns can help avoid these injuries.

The prevention is achieved by having joints capable of providing sufficient movement and muscles capable of producing optimal performance, stability, and force. If joint range of motion is limited (often due to muscle tightness) or muscles are weak, the body must find ways to compensate for these issues. Eventually this leads to abnormal technique, increasing the risk of injury. By using gait analysis, these abnormalities can be identified, assessed and properly treated.

At NHRC, following the 3D high-tech Gait Analysis and injury assessment, patients are provided with a comprehensive report containing the findings of the study. This report can then be taken to a healthcare provider for interpretation and treatment.

Alternatively, one of the highly trained members of the NHRC staff will provide recommendations for exercise and/or therapy to target any biomechanical issues identified during the evaluations. For more information or to book a 3D Gait Analysis please contact NHRC at (289) 362-3600
